Module content and teaching
The module aims to examine the meaning of creative development in the early years and includes: Introduction to key theories relating to creative development in the early years; Exploration of students’ understanding of the importance of creativity and imagination for young children; The importance of story and play in children’s cognitive and affective development; An examination of key theories of child development in art and music; Planning children’s learning in play, drama, art and music.
Principal learning outcomes
Deepen students’ awareness of the importance of creativity and imagination for children; Extend students’ knowledge and understanding of the significance of play for children’s learning; Enable students to understand the value of drama and story for young children’s learning; Extend students’ knowledge and understanding of the role of music in an early years setting; Provide opportunities for students to study the development of children’s art between the ages of three to eight years in some depth; Enable students to examine a range of theoretical approaches to the development of children’s art; Explore how play, drama, art and music can work together to support children’s learning.
