Principal aims

This module is one of a suite of first year options designed to complement the engineering and business studies of Engineering students with a broader view of the world in which they will work. This module focuses on providing engineers with a fundamental introductory understanding of how such multimedia input and output devices work, and an overview of how such devices are interconnected. Such devices include TVs and other display devices, CDs/DVDs, cameras, mobile phones and audio devices.The object is to prepare engineers to be able to contribute technically within the multimedia environment. The module provides an understanding of the fundamentals of multimedia electronic engineering and some software techniques. The modules does not deal with artistic aspects of multimedia studies such as web page design or video production.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student should be aware of: The technology behind input devices such as still and TV cameras; The technology behind output devices such as various displays and loudspeakers; How images, audio and text can be integrated within the electronic media; The basics of image formation and sound propagation; Forms of image and signal compression; Wireless, optical and wire interconnection, and switching; Mobile phone technology.

Timetabled teaching activities

All terms. 18 hours of lectures, 10 hours of seminars, 6 hours of laboratory sessions and 2 examples classes.
