Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module provides an overview of CADCAM for 3rd Year students. Both theoretical concepts and practical applications are covered. The CAM element links into the Manufacturing aims of the module while the CAD element links directly with the engineering aims. It also provides an introduction to discreet part simulation.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: CAD: Understand how geometrical models are structured within a CAD System and how the database of such models may be accessed by other applications; CAD: Understand how CAD tools such as design analysis, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, and knowledge based engineering can enhance engineering design; CAM: Understand how machine tools operate and how geometrical models can be translated into machine tool motion; CAM: Understand how CAM tools such as process planning, automation and simulation can enhance manufacture; Understand the limitations of CADCAM in terms of efficient exchange of data and in terms of effective product data management; Recognise the role that simulation has in Industry and the approach to building models.

Timetabled teaching activities

Autumn. This module includes 20 hours of lectures, 2 hours of examples classe and 18 hours of laboratory sessions.Required self-study: 110 hours
