Principal aims

The aim of the CFD module is to provide the student with a fundamental understanding of important numerical techniques in computational fluid dynamics and to establish a critical view on the use of CFD as part of the design process. This course introduces the fundamentals to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the analysis of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering flows.

Principal learning outcomes

On completion of the module, the student should be able to: understand the basic numerical methods and the underlying theory of CFD; apply numerical PDE (partial differential equation) theories to fluid problems, appreciate the capabilities and limitations of CFD in engineering design process; use a commercial CFD software (STAR-CCM+) to solve complex problems in fluid engineering and to optimise design parameters; and perform an analysis of CFD results.
