Module content and teaching

Principal aims

"The module provides a further understanding of the principles of operation of industrial robots, mobile robots and possibly future domestic robotic. It focuses on the knowledge needed to integrate robots with sensors particularly machine vision systems so that they can interact and adapt to their environment and behave ""intelligently"". This is a key module in the Robotics Elective. "

Principal learning outcomes

"By the end of the module the student should be able to: Appreciate safety issues for a given robot application and in particular the issues which will present themselves in laboratory work; Program a robot off-line and on-line to perform tasks; Select appropriate sensors for a given robot application:Understand and apply machine vision and set up a machine vision system for a robot guidance application; Set up communications between a robot and external devices e.g. machine vision systems, conveyors and sensors; Apply the theory of statics and dynamics to robot manipulators particularly serial manipulators; Design and evaluate robot tooling; Appreciate the issues (technical, social and economic) and challenges of the application of robots in industry and in the service industry. "

Timetabled teaching activities

Autumn. This module includes 20 hours of lectures, 4 hours of industrial visit, 5 hours of seminars and 9 hours of laboratory sessions.Required self-study: 112 hours
