Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To provide the scientific and technological foundations for understanding the operation, performance and design of internal combustion engines. To integrate studies in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics using examples from automotive and aerospace propulsion units.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: understand how the fundamental sciences of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics impact on the operation, performance and design of internal-combustion engines; understand the design and operating parameters and engine operating characteristics; demonstrate awareness of the industrial context.
