Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Cameras, LEDs and electronic displays are now part of everyday life. Lasers and fibre optics have become essential tools for research, measurement, data communication and manufacturing. With photonics and advanced optical technologies now part of the family of key enabling technologies for future economic development across the world, the course aims to provide knowledge in the field of optics and applications, which is essential for every engineer in research laboratories, on production lines and in field installations.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to: • Have comprehensive theoretical knowledge of the fundamental principles of light (e.g. image formation, light emission, interaction of light with materials). • Show a sound conceptual understanding of several key optical measurement techniques (e.g. microscopy, interferometry, thermal imaging) and their applications. • Display a wide breadth of knowledge regarding current developments at the forefront of optical technologies • Use practically, configure optimally and deploy several complex optical measurement instruments and systems, be able to interpret systematically measurement results and evaluate errors. • Communicate accurately, concisely and critically key findings from experimental results.
