Principal aims

"The module continues the development of concepts and techniques required for an understanding of fundamental aspects of wireless communications. The module’s aims are: To present fundamental theory and its application in understanding the operation of the physical layer of a wireless communications system, such as antennas, propagation, shadowing and diversity. "

Principal learning outcomes

"By the end of the module the student should be able to: Understand the properties of electromagnetic waves; Understand the propagation mechanisms; Understand the antenna fundamentals; Understand antenna array basics; Understand basic propagation models and propagation in fixed links; Understand path loss/propagation prediction methods; Understand the basics of shadowing and fading; Understand the fundamentals of diversity and multiple-input-multiple-output techniques; Understand the fundamentals of linear equalizers and Rake receivers; Understand the fundamentals of digital modulation techniques; Understand cellular communications and organization and spread spectrum basics. "
