Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to provide an insight and understanding of the physical processes contributing the overall mixing of soluble material within rivers. The module therefore contributes to a student's broader understanding of the impact of engineering on the environment.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module the students should be able to: • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of fluid mechanics applied to the dynamics of solute transport within environmental hydraulics. • Systematically apply robust engineering techniques to the solution of complex environmental challenges. • Identify and critically assess the scientific basis for predictions of solute mixing and transport, including travel time, delayed storage and the effects of transverse mixing. • Evaluate and criticize constructively the likely influence of such predictions upon design methodology, on legislation relating to the natural environment, on needs for engineering activity and on professional responsibility. • Design, perform and evaluate laboratory and field tests to elucidate and quantify mixing processes and develop numerical solutions to describe the processes.

Timetabled teaching activities

18 hrs lectures, 2 hrs revision classes, 10 hrs practical class/workshop, 8 hrs of laboratory and fieldwork, 3 hrs tutorials. Total of 41 hours.
