Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to: • enable you to acquire or develop skills in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish, in order to communicate in everyday situations for a work or study placement. • develop your understanding of linguistic diversity, dominance and change ('global language realities'), with specific reference to English (this being the language the class shares in common) but with relevance to your study of other languages. • promote reflection on the process of learning a foreign language, thereby enhancing your ability to learn any foreign language in the future.

Principal learning outcomes

Language learning outcomes are as validated for the academic modules incorporated. For example, according to the Language Centre, by the end of a Level 1 course, learners should be able to communicate effectively at a basic level in everyday situations for a work or study placement. In addition, students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some key issues, theories and research findings relating to foreign language learning • Reflect self-critically on the process of learning a foreign language • Plan, monitor and evaluate in ways appropriate to themselves the learning of a new foreign language

Timetabled teaching activities

Two timetabled interactive lecture hours per week plus one seminar hour per week during Term 1, plus language classes as timetabled by the Language Centre or Italian department.
