Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The overall aim of the module is to investigate fundamental questions in historiography in general and film history in particular. General aims of the module include exploration of the following: the relevance of an approach to film history throuh the study of 'Great Artists'; the question of causality in film history; ideas of period, film movement and national cinema; the problem of film and realism; the writing of film history. It is envisioned that whilst the fundamental aims and structure of the course remains the same, concrete case studies might vary from year to year in relation to staff availability.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should have an understanding of the variety of possible relationships between cinema and society, the role of the state in film production in selected historical contexts, the impact of the film industry and the star system, and the place of cinema in mass culture.
