Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module introduces candidates to a cross-section of major French films from the advent of sound to the present day, with particular reference to the 1930s (Clair, Vigo, Renoir, Carné), the post-war years (Melville, Bresson, Resnais, Becker, Dassin), the 1960s (the nouvelle vague of Truffaut, Godard, Varda, Rivette, and Rohmer), and developments through the 1980s and 1990s and since (Malle, Beineix, Balasko, Denis, Ozon, and others). Particular attention will be paid to changes in style, genre, and cinematographic form and to the evolving social and political context of film-making in France during the period.

Principal learning outcomes

Students can expect by the end of the year to have acquired some detailed knowledge of the history of French cinema based on the works studied and good familiarity with the methods of film analysis. Students intending to take other film-based modules taught in the Department are strongly encouraged to take this module in their second year.

Timetabled teaching activities

Students are required to attend six hours weekly during the Autumn and Spring Terms. (Students should note that attendance at screenings is a course requirement).
