Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module will explore some of the most important ideas and significant developments in French thought from 1945 to the present day. It will focus on a number of important works by key thinkers of this period, setting these works in their wider intellectual and historical contexts, and exploring the context and impact of the politically committed writer who became such a feature of France in the 20th century.

Principal learning outcomes

Issues to be addressed include: the changing place of 'thinkers' and social and political thought in France; conceptions of freedom and dilemmas over constraint; issues of sexual difference; gender and politics; language; the analysis of popular culture; Marx and ideology; language and democracy; the notion of the Event.
