Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module seeks: to consolidate and develop your ability to write and speak to a theme confidently and at a level of some intellectual sophistication in correct French; to consolidate and develop your awareness of the conventions governing different forms of written French and English; to consolidate and develop your ability to translate from French to English; to develop a detailed knowledge of French grammatical structures.

Principal learning outcomes

"Written production of French is based on tuition in essay-writing. The objectives of the essay class are to enable you to produce a structured argument on a topic of serious intellectual content, either relating broadly to your intellectual interests as reflected in aspects of your degree modules (e.g. literature, language, history, cinema, art, politics), or to matters of general topical or cultural concern, in French that is grammatically correct, idiomatic, varied in vocabulary and grammatical structures, and written in an appropriate register. Detailed comprehension of written French, awareness of conventions governing some of the different forms of written French and English, knowledge of French grammatical structures and idiom, and translation skills, are developed in the translation class. By the end of the module you should be able to translate from French into English accurately, idiomatically and in an appropriate register. You should also be able to translate from English to French using detailed knowledge of French grammatical structures, vocabulary and idiom, and employing an appropriate register. Oral classes aim to develop and consolidate skills in the correct pronunciation and intonation of spoken French, the comprehension of oral and written French, structured oral presentation, and oral discussion of an intellectually serious kind in French which is grammatically correct, fluent, idiomatic and in an appropriate register. "

Timetabled teaching activities

You attend one oral class and two written classes (one essay, one translation) per week.
