Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to give students a rounded understanding of several, interrelated areas including: what seeing is (in its diverse aspects), how theories affect seeing, and how art issues from ways and theories of seeing. The module places also emphasis on actual demonstrations of how people (including artists) perceive the world, and on how works of art function visually. It is not period-specific, but focuses instead on the nature of perception, and its role in representation and expression.

Principal learning outcomes

The module will equip students with a knowledge of theories of visual perception, distinguishing between the different explanation of the relationships of art and visual perception. They will gain the tools to consider and understand diverse viewpoints, think conceptually and independently and undertake critical analysis of artefacts in their context.
