Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The distinction between castles and houses for the nobility has undergone a re-evaluation recently and the boundaries are now less rigidly set. This module aims to explore the secular architecture of the period from the high Middle Ages through to the early modern period to evaluate its form and function. It will introduce methods of architectural analysis that involve thinking about the uses of the buildings as much as the development of plans and façade designs. Starting with the castles of Edward I it will focus on local buildings such as Kenilworth, which has a building period that spans most of the course, and Warwick, as well as East Midlands buildings such as Wollaton Hall, and Hardwick Old and New Halls.

Principal learning outcomes

The module will equip students with a knowledge of secular architecture form the middle ages to the modern period. They will gain the tools to evaluate and architecutrally analyse both the form and function of buildings and develop the skills to consider and discuss diverse aspects from design and construction to purpose and status
