Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module will examine the lure of the object in art history, anthropology, and cultural theory in early twentieth-century Germany. It will focus on Aby Warburg and Walter Benjamin as exemplary thinkers who sought to expand the definition of art and the understanding of the beholder’s involvement in aesthetic experience. It will introduce students to relations between art history and anthropology, to theories of art, symbolic form and the persistence of antiquity, and to notions of myth, mimicry and the aura.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will command a broad knowledge of intellectual developments in cultural theory in Germany in the decades around 1900. They will demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical foundations of the discipline of History of Art and an ability to situate key works, writings and ideas in their historical context through critical analysis and conceptual thinking.
