Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aims of the module are: to enable you to understand the wider social and political environment of business activity; to examine the different forms of governance to which firms are subject, and to which they in turn contribute. Formal regulation will be seen in this wider context; to present empirical puzzles through case studies and other examples, and to present concepts, theories and wider evidence to enable these puzzles to be understood.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: recognise and understand the different forms of governance that surround business activity and the constraints and opportunities they present to firms' activities; learn from and make use of written material; understand the application of abstract concepts to practical cases; appraise the quality of evidence, and link themes and multi-disciplinary approaches together; gain perspective on your own disciplinary approaches; understand social science analytical approaches; begin to develop associated analytical skill.
