Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aims of the module are: to provide an introductory analysis of the international context and dimensions of business activity with particular reference to factors relevant to the competitiveness of European firms; to present the key institutional/legal/regulatory features of different varieties of capitalism; to develop a critical understanding of the nature, behaviour and outcomes associated with the economic, social, political and legal systems that govern corporations.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: understand the business responses of global firms to the features and influences of the business environment; appreciate the importance and impact of political, economic, social and cultural factors; read, analyse, and compare different theoretical perspectives on globalisation, convergence and varieties of capitalism, strategic management, and the role and influence of multinational corporations in both the developed world and in developing countries; demonstrate familiarity with the international economic press; integrate different fields of knowledge in the analysis of business and management problems; develop a critical understanding for the analysis and interpretation of data and information; demonstrate oral skills in presentation and communication; demonstrate written skills to analyse and compare data and financial information.
