Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module provides a solid conceptual understanding of the entrepreneurial development of new businesses. There are two main areas of interest: comparing large and small firms; and understanding the entrepreneurial development of new businesses.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: understand the differences between small and large businesses in terms of uncertainty, employment, innovation; understand the different conceptual approaches to defining new businesses; understand the different conceptual models that seek to explain why entrepreneurs create new businesses; appreciate the empirical challenges in identifying new businesses; understand the empirical and theoretical links between new businesses and business closure; analyse empirical data and key readings; demonstrate teamwork skills through developing the group presentation; critically evaluate evidence and indentify its strategic implications; demonstrate analytical and critical skills by applying concepts learnt during the module.
