Module content and teaching

Principal aims

• To introduce students to a broad range of issues and techniques in qualitative research; • To highlight the (particular) strengths and weaknesses of different qualitative approaches and methods; • To help students make the right choices in conceptualization, case selection, approach, data-gathering technique, and data-processing method for particular research design; • To link specific qualitative methods with core themes in the discipline such as elections, social movements, ecology, security, war, democracy, foreign policy, ethnic minorities, presidential power, coalition politics, European Integration, terrorism; • To apply specific methods in order to answer a question around one of those core themes.

Principal learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to: • Understand a broad range of issues and techniques in qualitative research (conceptualization, case selection, approach, data-gathering technique, and data-processing methods for particular research designs); • Understand strengths and weaknesses of different qualitative approaches and methods; • Understand how to link specific qualitative methods with core themes in the discipline; • To apply specific methods in order to answer a question around one of those core themes.

Classes are typically scheduled to Tuesdays, 3-5 pm, starting week 1 (Timetabled Teaching Activities are not finalised until September).
