Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of modes of engagement with individual interiority and with creative and aesthetic questions in post-war Italian cinema, and to place these within the contexts both of Italian cultural history and of broader themes and questions in Film Studies.

Principal learning outcomes

By taking a thematic rather than a chronological approach, the module will enable students to encounter significant figures and movements in Italian cinema history and to form a sense of the interactions between them, whilst developing a more complex and flexible understanding of factors which have influenced and shaped Italian cinema, from both practitioners’ and spectators’ points of view.
