Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module is jointly taught by members of the School of Law and the Department of Sociology. It aims to provide an introduction to contemporary theories and debates about the role of law in modern society. During the course of the module main schools and theorists of relevance to an understanding of the role of law in modern society will be discussed. The syllabus may include some or all of the following: positivist and sociological theories of law; critical legal theories; law and capitalism; law and power; feminist jurisprudence; theories of justice; legal pluralism; law and discourse; law and anthropology, theories of justice, and systems theory of law.
