Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of the module is to study a range of contemporary human rights issues from a broadly inter-disciplinary perspective. Although the particular topics chosen may vary from year to year, reflecting matters of current concern, the course aims to provide a wide-ranging and in-depth study of theoretical and practical aspects of human rights law and practice. The module traces the development of human rights discourse in the post World War II era, and explores the relationship between theories of human rights and particular socio-economic models. The module will analyse and evaluate various theories of human rights and their impact on major political, social and economic issues. In recent times, such issues have included the scope and historical development of human rights; the relationship between individual human rights and minority rights; cultural relativism and human rights; the role of truth commissions in addressing human rights violations; human rights issues arising from the post-Communist transitions in Central and Eastern Europe; regionalism and human rights; human rights debates on economic and social rights and political and civil rights in the context of contemporary global developments; the impact of globalisation on our understanding of human rights; connecting human rights in the developing world with the likely impact of international financial institutions; a critical analysis of the role and impact of global civil society.
