Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module introduces the study of law in literature, literature in law, and law as literature. Its over-arching aim is to explore literature's potential to act as a corrective to law, not only in terms of making the law more effective at what it professes to do, but in terms also of prompting the law to re-examine what it does and provoking it to employ more humane methods for doing what it does. The course is wide in its aims and outlook, but by reason for limits of time it is necessarily curtailed in its practical scope.

Principal learning outcomes

The duration of a half-module does not afford the time to turn a law student to attain the ideals of a fully-fledged literature scholar, but it affords enough time to develop sufficiently to leave the legal nest and begin to appreciate (and recall) what law looks like from the outside.
