Principal aims

More marriages are ended by death than by divorce, yet those aspects of law which profoundly affect intact, functioning families are barely mentioned in most family law courses: tax, social security, property and housing law are of crucial everyday importance to many families; the extent to which labour laws promote a work-life balance affects the quality of family life; and the movement of modern families across international borders is affected by asylum and immigration laws and requires the creation of international family law. This course accordingly focuses on the intact family and the legal issues that affect it. It brings together a number of lecturers with expertise in different fields to consider how different areas of the law affect intact families. It reflects Warwick’s traditional focus on ‘law in context’ by examining laws of everyday relevance such as taxation and social security, as well as considering laws that may affect intact families in more exceptional circumstances.
