Module content and teaching
Principal aims
Microbiology and Virology are core and important aspects of all the degrees we offer. The purposes of this module are to introduce students to many aspects of microbiology and virology using infectious diseases as a common link. The introductory material on epidemiology will enable students to appreciate the way that diseases spread and the methods used to investigate this spread. This module will serve as the introduction to material covered in all degree streams and is the foundation for a number of related options in future years.
Principal learning outcomes
Through this module students should gain an appreciation of a relatively unfamiliar area, which does not figure largely in the school curriculum. The information should lay a foundation of factual knowledge to underpin future modules. Upon completion of the module, students should be able to understand the role of various structures associated with the bacterial cell in causing disease, understand a range of diseases caused by bacteria, understand the structure of viruses and how this relates to the capacity of viruses to cause disease, understand the host response to viral challenge, understand the mechanisms by which diseases spread, and understand how epidemiological theory is used to understand the behaviour of pathogens in populations.
Timetabled teaching activities
