Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module will consider how science is communicated to different audiences and in different media, drawing out issues around science in society, for example the roles and responsibilities of scientists and journalists in communicating scientific research and the public understanding of science; and how science is communicated in museums and on TV and the Internet. There will also be a skills-based focus to the module that will include presentation of research in journals and for science conferences, writing newspaper articles and press releases, analysing science reports, newspaper articles and presenting to the public.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to: (i) communicate scientific knowledge and ideas effectively and to a variety of audiences; (ii) evaluate the effectiveness of communication in science; (iii) identify what makes science newsworthy; (iv) evaluate the way science is presented in the media.
