Principal aims

We are facing an era of significant challenges in the way we live and the impact we have on the planet. The global population is expected to exceed 9 Billion by 2050. How can we maintain our current living standards within the developed countries and allow for the developing countries to reach a similar level? We are currently over dependant on non renewable resources such as oil. This is recognised by the setting of both International and UK Government targets to reduce our current use of resources and to search for alternative solutions. Billions of pounds have been invested in driving research to create a new industry this is seen by some as the next industrial revolution. At present no single solution has been identified

Principal learning outcomes

The objectives of this module are to critically assess the challenges for global sustainability, to investigate new technologies, e.g. Biofuels, renewable chemicals, and to explore the potential for the next generation biorefining/bioenergy industries.
