Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module syllabus will include:HIV - evolution, quasispecies, transmission. Hepatitis viruses - B, C and others Influenza A virus - shift, drift, emergence and zoonosis, evolution, vaccines. Emerging viruses: flaviviruses, dengue, WNV, Ebola, SARS, Nipah etc. Cross-cutting themes of virus variation, evolution, vaccination and epidemiology

Principal learning outcomes

From this module you will be able to: Appreciate the current status of three major human viral pandemics; Understand the potential origins of new and emerging viral pandemics; Understand the molecular mechanisms which underpin virus variation and evolution.
