## Module content and teaching

###### Principal aims

At the beginning of the nineteenth century the familiar tools of calculus, differentiation and integration, began to run into problems. Mathematicians were unsure of how to apply these tools to sums of infinitely many functions. The origins of Analysis lie in their attempt to formalise the ideas of calculus purely in the the language of arithmetic and to resolve these problems. In part A of this two part core module (24 CATs altogether) you will study ideas pertaining to sequences and series. In term 2, part B will deal with the notions of continuity and differentiability.

###### Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the year you will be able to answer many interesting questions: What do we mean by `infinity'? How can you accurately compute the value of ? or ? or ?(2)? How can you add up infinitely many numbers, or infinitely many functions? Can all functions be approximated by polynomials?

###### Timetabled teaching activities

This course is split into two halves, covering terms one and two. At the beginning of the term you will be assigned to a class of about 30 which will meet twice a week for two hours each time. Once a week you will also have the opportunity to attend a large plenary lecture.
