## Module content and teaching

###### Principal aims

The course is split into 6 sections:Phase Plane Methods, Reaction Kinetics, Biological Waves, Multi-Species Waves, Animal coat patterns. Neural models for pattern formation/storage and recognition, to introduce ideas and techniques of mathematical modelling in biology.

###### Principal learning outcomes

To gain an insight into propagational phenomena in biology, using a variety of mathematical techniques: analysis of travelling wave solutions of PDEs and of standing wave solutions; establishing the existence of waves; computation of wave speeds; dynamical systems and phase plane analysis.

Prerequisites: Any one or more of MA235 Introduction to Mathematical Biology, MA240 Modelling Nature's Nonlinearity, MA250 Partial Differential Equations are recommended. Note that the second year is not essential.
