Module content and teaching
Principal aims
"This module, which runs in the spring term and is restricted to Single Honours Philosophy and ""Philosophy with..."" students, uses a problem-based learning approach to foster the development of reading, presentation and essay writing skills. Students are assigned to small tutorial groups, each of which meets the module tutor for one hour per week to present and discuss the results of self-directed work. Over the course of the term, students typically work on three key topics in philosophy. They will be given tasks such as finding relevant literature in the library, defining key concepts, identifying patterns of argument, preparing essay plans, giving oral presentations. Assessment for this module will be based on student essays."
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to read philosophical texts with understanding, engage in informed critical discussion of selected philosophical topics or arguments, write a well-structured, critical essay on a philosophical topic, and make effective use of library resources in philosophy.
Timetabled teaching activities
Teaching activities comprise weekly tutorials in groups of approximately 5 students during the Spring Term
