Module content and teaching
Principal aims
This module introduces you to some core issues within the philosophy of science, including the problem of induction, the demarcation between science and non-science, the underdetermination of theory by data, and the status of realism in the sciences. We will read key texts by some of the most influential philosophers of science such as Popper, Kuhn and Quine, and examples from the history of science will be used to critically examine their arguments..
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should have gained knowledge of some key positions and debates in the philosophy, have developed some ability to critically engage with those positions and debates, and be able to appreciate some of the connections between concrete scientific practice and philosophical theorizing about science.

Summer term. 2 lectures and 1 seminar per week for the first 5 weeks.
