Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module examines some leading positions in contemporary normative ethics, including consequentialism and various forms of non-consequentialism, such as contractualism and pluralist intuitionism. In addition, we shall examine some debates in applied ethics, concerning duties of assistance, rights of self-defense, and terrorism, as well as various threats to moral responsibility.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should have a good grasp of the most important questions in normative ethics, and a good understanding of leading normative ethical theories. They should also have a good understanding of some major questions in applied ethics.

Timetabled teaching activities

Normally held during the spring term.Teaching will normally comprise a 2 hour lecture and 1 hour seminar per week.
