Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This half-module will focus on Hegel and Marx. In particular, we will undertake a detailed examination of Hegel's conceptions of self-consciousness and mutual recognition in his Phenomenology of Spirit and Philosophy of Right. The module as a whole will explore the ways in which post-Kantian thinkers prepared the ground for many of the radical changes in philosophy that occurred (especially in the Continental tradition) in the 20th century.

Principal learning outcomes

The objective of this module is to enable students to understand and assess key texts and arguments by Hegel and Marx.

Teaching activities comprise I x 2 hour Lecture and 1 hour seminar weekly during the course of one term.
