Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to: *Provide students with historical, theoretical, and comparative perspectives on post-colonial African politics - where 'Africa' is limited to sub-Saharan Africa. *Provide students with an overview of key themes, debates, and issues. *Enable students to analyse debates with respect to empirical case studies.

Principal learning outcomes

*Critically analyse the nature of post-colonial states, and the relationship between state and society in different countries. *Critically analyse the recent history and contemporary politics of particular African countries. *Compare political processes and institutions in different African countries. *Analyse problems confronting African states including efforts to create stable democracies. *Analyse why some states have collapsed into civil war, while others have been relatively successful in terms of economic development and democratisation.

Timetabled teaching activities
