Principal aims

• To develop an understanding of the social constitution of the state and the economy • To introduce key theories of the political economy of the liberal-democratic state • To scrutinise tensions between ‘the liberal’ and ‘the democratic’ in the liberal-democratic state • To develop understanding of critical perspectives on the liberal-democratic state • To develop written and verbal presentation skills, and research skills Module objectives

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will: • Understand the way in which state and economy can be interpreted as complementary socially constituted forms • Understand key theories of the liberal-democratic state • Be able to identify tensions between ‘the liberal’ and ‘the democratic’ in the liberal-democratic state • Understand critical perspectives of the liberal-democratic state • Have developed written and verbal presentation skills, and research skills Module structure and teaching style

Timetabled teaching activities

1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour seminar per week in weeks 1-10 (except reading week)
