Principal aims

*To introduce students to the key methodological, conceptual and theoretical challenges involved in the study of governing Britain; *To analyze and consider the challenges faced by British state managers, and the domestic/international and political/economic contexts within which they are situated; *To link the theoretical and empirical study of the political economy of Britain in the 20th Century so as to better understand the relationship between state and economy; *To develop student abilities to present logical, coherent and well supported arguments; *To enhance student research skills, especially with regard to the analysis and study of primary, particularly archival, sources.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to communicate authoritatively on the principal methodological, conceptual and theoretical issues raised through the study of the British state. They will also be able to identify the key events, themes and moments in British politics and economics from the end of the 19th Century to the present day. Finally, students will be able to combine theoretical enquiry with empirical study to produce quality analysis on the continuities and changes in the development of the British state and economy since the end of the 19th Century.
