Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The principal aims of this module are to: Be able to provide relevant historical context to understand current events in the Arab-Israeli conflict; Be able to analyse key events in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict; Be able to distinguish between the different narratives about the conflict (the national narratives of different countries as well as more marginalized counter-narratives); To gain knowledge about the reasons for violence/war as well as the reasons for attempts at peace-making and why these have failed.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you will: Be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the historical events that make up the Arab-Israeli conflict and the international, regional and national factors shaping these events; Be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the different actors involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict, their respective positions towards the conflict, their relations between one another, how these may have changed over time and the factors shaping their behaviour; Be able to interpret different sources of information about events, trends and actors in the Arab-Israeli conflict; Be able to identify and evaluate different proposed solutions to the conflict.

The format of this module is a weekly 2-hr workshop in terms 1 and 2.
