Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module examines the key issues surrounding Britain's role in the 'war on terror'. The aims of this module are as follows: *To introduce students to the key themes and issues relating to Britain’s; involvement in the war on terror, as well as the various controversies that have emerged as a result; *To facilitate an analysis of the events surrounding the war on terror in terms of core debates relating to British democracy and the operation of the British political system; *To encourage critical thinking about both the domestic and international implications and consequences of Britain's participation in the confict; *To enhance student research skills through the collection and analysis of information from a wide range of sources, especially primary documentation; *To develop student abilities to present a well made, coherent and logically consistent argument.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to: *Demonstrate advanced and applied knowledge of the theoretical issues and debates surrounding Britain’s participation in the 'war on terror'; *Demonstrate detailed and critical awareness of the key events involved in the build up to the confict, the war itself, and its unfolding aftermath; *Relate the main developments surrounding Britain’s involvement in the war to core theoretical debates concerning the nature of British politics and contemporary international relations. "
