Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module seeks to: Offer an overview of the dynamics and characteristics of the East Asia region; Facilitate an examination of past and contemporary issues pertaining to East Asian political economies and their development; Provide advanced level knowledge of a region which is of growing international importance, and on which expertise is increasingly in demand; Equip students with the conceptual and analytical tools to make sense of the region’s political and economic transformation; Enhance student research skills through the collection and analysis of information from a wide range of primary and secondary sources.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of and analytical insight into processes of political, economic and cultural change in the region; combine empirical knowledge of East Asia with theoretical insight in all aspects of the module; Locate the study of regional dynamics within the wider field of political economy theorizing; Analyse critically complex ideas, both orally and in writing, in relation to the issues influencing the transformation of East Asia; Construct and substantiate a critical argument.

Timetabled teaching activities

1 x Lecture and 1 x Seminar per week. Classes begin in week 1 of the autumn term and finish in week 20
