Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The principal aims of this module are: • To provide an introduction into basic methods of inferential statistics and their empirical application; • To provide hands-on experience of using software for introductory data analysis in this context.

Principal learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to: • Understand basic elements of inferential statistics (e.g. correlation, ANOVA, and elementary regression analysis); • Conduct basic quantitative analysis using secondary survey data; • Begin to critically engage with quantitative findings in social science journal articles.

Timetabled teaching activities

Typically one 1 hour lecture in weeks 15-19, 21-24 (Timetabled Teaching Activities are not finalised until September). You will also be required to attend 1 x 2 hour Seminar each week (you must choose your Seminar at the start of term).

This is a core module, which is supported by funding from the Nuffield/ESRC/HEFCE as part of the Q-Step degrees in ‘Sociology and Quantitative Methods’ and ‘Politics, International Studies and Quantitative Methods.’ Prerequisites: QS104
