Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The main aim is to correctly interpret non-linear regressions, and to understand and use models with qualitative variables. The module builds on the classical linear regression model covered in “Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Social Science” (BA year 1), to study estimation and inference problems. The theory is presented at an intermediate technical level, and students are trained on how to use and understand modern computer software. Algebra and some calculus are used to derive a number of important results while the STATA program is used for practical applications. The module provides a theoretical foundation for the topics to be found in “Intermediate Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences II”.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to: • Understand how and when to apply inferential statistics, as well as some elementary multivariate statistics; • Gain critical awareness of the limitations of linear regression techniques; • Gain extensive hands-on experience of using software for data analysis in this context.

Timetabled teaching activities

Lectures/Seminars are typically scheduled to Fridays, 2-3 pm / 3-5pm, starting week 1 (Timetabled Teaching Activities are not finalised until September).
