Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to equip students with the statistical knowledge and skills expected of quantitative social scientists, and to lay foundations for further study. The module builds on the material covered in “Intermediate Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences I” (BA year 2), and provides a theoretical foundation for the topics to be found in “Advanced Quantitative Methods” (BA year 3). Its main focus is on graphical representation, data handling, model specification, interpretation and forecasting.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to: • Effectively interpret and represent the results of statistical analysis; • Apply statistical tools to modelling, estimation, inference, and forecasting in the context of real world social and political problems; • Critically evaluate the results and conclusions from published research.

Timetabled teaching activities

Lectures/Seminars are typically scheduled to Fridays, 1-2 pm / 2-4pm, starting week 15 (Timetabled Teaching Activities are not finalised until September).
