Module content and teaching
This module is designed to give students an overview of abnormal behaviour in the general population based on empirical findings as presented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 4th edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR). Material will be presented in terms of diagnostic categories as well as aetiology, therapeutic techniques, and outcomes according to various current and historic theoretical paradigms. In this module we will take a predominantly scientific approach while considering the importance of social factors and clinical findings.
Principal learning outcomes
"After taking this module, students should be: Familiar with the taxonomic system used in conceptualising mental disorders; Familiar with the major diagnostic categories delineated in the DSM-IV-TR as well as with multi-axial diagnostic procedures; Familiar with current and historic perspectives in the aetiology and treatment of mental illness (e. g., cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, biomedical); Familiar with primary therapeutic interventions and efficacy according to current literature; Able to think critically about current formulations of abnormal behaviour; Familiar with practical and ethical issues that arise in mental health care in the UK. "
