Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To cover background mathematical material assumed by other modules, to give experience of learning by self-study and to develop the habit of keeping up with the problem sheets handed out in physics modules

Principal learning outcomes

You should become familiar with complex numbers, curve sketching, the mathematics used to model waves, integration and Fourier methods at a level necessary to cope with all first year physics modules and to start the second year core module, PX275 Mathematical Methods for Physicists . You should be able to use the knowledge obtained from lectures and reading to successfully tackle appropriate problems in the physics covered by year 1 modules.

Timetabled teaching activities

Weekly seminar groups.
