Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To further develop ideas quantum mechanics and illustrate these by application to atomic physics. Some of these applications will be developed further in other third and fourth year modules. In particular, the concept of spin introduced in PX262 will be extended and approximation methods such as perturbation theory will be developed.

Principal learning outcomes

At the end of the module you should: be able to describe the need to introduce the concept of spin into quantum theory and show how to incorporate its effects into the non-relativistic theory; be familiar with the approximation methods which are applicable when the Schrödinger equation is not exactly soluble; appreciate the importance of the Pauli exclusion principle and be able to discuss the periodic table and chemical activity in simple terms.
