Module content and teaching

Principal aims

By the end of this module, you will be able to: a) explain what it means to conceptualise gender as a social construction, and how that conceptualisation is different from binary, essentialist and naturalising understandings of gender; b) identify, characterise and analyse processes of social construction of gender in different social settings and institutions; c) discuss the relationship between macro and micro levels of analysis of the social construction of gender; d) describe and contrast the key principles of different sociological approaches to the study of gender; e) identify examples of the intersections between gender and other axes of social difference and inequality, such as ‘race’, class, sexuality, sexual identity or (dis)ability; f) draw on key module concepts, relevant scholarly literature and appropriate evidence and examples to produce a written discussion of a particular aspect of the social construction of gender.
