Principal aims

In political science you can, if you want, study voting patterns, constitutions, systems of government, parties, leadership, and so on, without having to link them to something outside politics proper. Sociology is a more diffuse discipline, with grand ambitions (or used to be) and so it doesn’t have to do this; it can go beyond the boundaries of politics proper. At its most basic, political sociology is the study, not of political phenomena per se, but of the interaction of politics and society. That we can do this at all is one of the paradoxes of modern politics itself (a bit like the one where Durkheim says that ours is the most individualistic age in history, yet also one in which for the first time we can understand the forces that transcend our individual strivings and beliefs).
